Russia & Ukraine - two sides to a story - an historical approach

The talk will provide an historical background to the current Russo-Ukraine War, the origins of which ultimately date back to the Mongol conquest of Kievan Rus' in 1241.  Over the following centuries, the evolution of a religious, political and cultural dividing line that has seldom aligned with national boundaries, together with a succession of outside interventions, made conflict between two separate identities and spheres of influence almost inevitable.   This contrasts with the superficial short-term black and white narrative of the conflict presented in the news media since 2014.  Understanding the history, together with its consequences, is crucial to the settlement of the conflict and establishing lasting peace in the region.
